At the North Jersey Homeschool Science Center, we work to provide a welcoming and supportive space for everyone. All classes are secular and taught according to generally accepted scientific principles.
The Science Center welcomes All Races, All Religions, All Genders and Gender Expressions, All Sexual Orientations, All Countries of Origin, All Ethnicities, and All Abilities.
Can you tell me more about the Science Center and your classes?
All of our class options meet once a week, and we run four 8 week sessions each year for a full school year of 32 weeks. Students can take one or multiple classes in a day, and parents can drop off kids prior to the first class of the day and pick up after their last class of the day (drop-off is available to all children who are fully independent in the bathroom). Students are welcome to bring a snack or lunch for their breaks, although please keep in mind we do not allow any peanut or tree nut products in the building. Parents are also welcome to stay in our lobby during classes, or we are located within walking distance of the Mountain Lakes library, playgrounds and a short drive from Route 46 in Parsippany.
What is the difference between the various Junior level classes?
Our Junior Science, Junior STEAM, and Junior Engineers classes offer hands-on exploration of various science disciplines, including Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science, Nature Studies, Engineering, Robotics and Technology, through experiments, games and crafts. Junior Robotics will use Sphero, Botley, Lego Spike, along with games and experiments to explore various aspects of robotics. Junior Around the World will look at the science and engineering marvels found all over the world, while Junior Storybook STEM will discover the science in favorite picture books. Multiple classes can be taken without repeating activities.
What happens if I need to cancel a class registration?
Registrations that are cancelled prior to the start of classes will be refunded in full. No refunds are issued once classes have begun.
I have a child that is borderline between Elementary and Middle/High School classes.
Which should I register them for?
No prior knowledge is needed for any of our classes (other than math). The main difference between levels is the safety expectations. Our Elementary students should be able to follow basic instructions in order for their experiments and activities to work properly, but there are no safety concerns if they decide to do their own thing. In our Middle/High School level classes, it is important that students are able to correctly follow instructions and adhere to strict safety standards. Our MS/HS level classes will regularly use sharp objects (scalpels, utility knives), open flames, hot plates, and harsh chemicals that should not be mixed.
Can your Middle/High School level classes really be used as a full High School course?
Our MS/HS level classes are conducting standard High School level labs. Our small classes sizes allow us to safely do these activities with younger (middle school) students. Since our classes meet just once a week and are primarily the lab component (with appropriate background information given to support the labs), a full high school level course would need to include additional readings and/or videos at home. Since our classes are primarily conceptual and do not have a math prerequisite, additional work with the math components for classes such as Physics and Chemistry should also be done. We can provide a syllabus of what is covered in class so that it is easier to match up to additional work at home.
What topics are covered in the various classes?
Syllabi for 2025-2026 classes will be coming soon. Contact us for previous syllabi.
How does the Math Workshop work?
The Math Workshop includes students studying at all different levels (Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Consumer Math). Each student is able to work at their own pace and will work best for students who are willing to ask questions when they don’t understand. During class times, students are given problems to work on while homework is corrected (homework is a very important aspect of the workshop), after which the teacher will work with them one-on-one (or in a small group if there are multiple students at the same level) going over any corrections to the homework and teaching the next lesson. Students are given notes for each lesson, and practice problems to work on that allow them to try out what they learned in the lesson before they leave. Students are able to contact the teacher by email or text during the time between sessions with questions about the homework.
Do your classes have homework?
The only classes that have homework are our math classes. We can provide a syllabus of what topics are covered each week if you would like to do additional work/readings at home.
Can we do a trial class?
Yes, we do allow a trial class during any session on a space available basis. Contact us to schedule a trial class.
We do not charge for trial classes.
Can we stop by for a tour?
Yes, you are welcome to stop by for a tour. The best times to visit and speak to a teacher would be prior to the start of class or after classes end for the day. Contact us about scheduling a tour.
Do you offer a sibling discount or discount when registering for more than one class?
